— The Lacey Fire District 3 Board of Commissions took action at their regular Thursday meeting to place a ballot measure on the November 2011 general election to restore the District’s levy rate to $1.50 per thousand of assessed valuation. “This was a difficult decision for some board members, including me, as we are all aware of the struggling economic circumstances many of our citizens are facing,” said Chairman Gene Dobry. “The difficulty is the district is facing similar challenges.  We cannot deliver the level of service our community requires without an increase.”

A 6-year-old boy got a little overzealous climbing a neighbor’s tree Sunday evening in Lacey and had to be rescued by firefighters.  A homeowner on Apollo Street heard a call for help at 7:18 p.m. and ran outside to find a young boy stuck on a small limb atop a 40-foot tall cherry tree.

Firefighters were called and used a ladder truck to get the boy down, where he had a happy reunion with his family.

This notice is posted to inform all members of the public and the District that the Board of Fire Commissioners will hold a Board Workshop to discuss the upcoming ballot measure “Levy Lid Lift”.  The public is welcome to attend.

OnFriday, July 1, at 2:30pm  the Thurston County Special Operations Rescue Team (S.O.R.T.) responded with Thurston County Fire District 7 (North Olympia) for a 12 year old boy that was trapped on a 40’ cliff.  The child’s mother stated that her son was playing with friends on a trail above the cliff and ventured too close.  He was reaching out on a limb to look down the cliff when a branch snapped off causing the boy to slide down the slope.  Luckily for him he was caught approximately 15’ down the slope by a root outcropping stopping his fall.  The First Responders from the North Olympia Fire Department recognized the situation as a high-angle rope rescue and dispatched the Thurston County SORT.

The rescue team lowered a rescuer to the patient via a rope system.  The patient was then attached to the rescuer’s rope system and both were lowered to the beach where the patient’s family was waiting.  Rescuers with Lacey Fire District Three, Thurston County Special Operations Rescue Team, North Olympia Fire Department and Olympia Fire Department all responded.

June 13, 2011 — Lacey Fire District 3 will be honoring retiring Fire Chief Jim Broman, after 22 years of dedicated service to the District. The District has planned a retirement event for June 17, 2011, at Indian Summer Golf and Country Club. The event will take place from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., and is open to the public. Members of the public who wish to attend are asked to R.S.V.P. the Fire District. The cost of admittance for the public is $20 per person.

Fire Chief Broman announced his retirement earlier this year after 22 years serving in the top leadership position for the District. Over his tenure with the District, Mr. Broman has seen it grow from a small, rural agency to the busiest fire agency in Thurston County. Notable accomplishments in recent years include presiding over the annexation of the City of Lacey into the Fire District, the expansion of the Board of Fire Commissioners from three to five, and improving advanced life support services in the District through the addition of a halftime medic unit.

Members of the public interested in attending the Fire Chief’s retirement event are asked to contact the Fire District’s headquarters station in person, 1231 Franz St SE, or by calling 360-491-2410 to R.S.V.P.

LFD3 congratulates Firefighter Ethan Kruse (Second from the left) on his recent graduation from the Tacoma Fire Department’s Paramedic Training Program.  Ethan completed the rigorous year-long training program alongside fellow firefighters from the City of Tacoma and West Pierce Fire/Rescue.  The training involves well over 1,000 hours of combined classroom and clinical work and candidates must then complete a final national standard written and practical evaluation.  Ethan completed all of these requirements in stellar fashion and has now returned to the department where he is working to complete the final requirements to become certified as a paramedic in Thurston County.  We are proud of Ethan’s accomplishments and glad to have him back serving our citizens!

May 12, 2011

During the week of May 15th – 21st, Firefighters from Lacey Fire District 3 are celebrating National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week by providing citizen training in the new CPR techniques at several locations throughout the District. You only need 2 minutes!

Thurston County has one of the highest survival rates in the nation for individuals whose hearts stop beating normally and require CPR and the use of a defibrillator. “EMS responders with Lacey and other county agencies undergo extensive training to improve the ways in which these cases are managed by emergency responders, but another real key to survival is immediate CPR performed by citizens,” says Steve Brooks, Division Chief with Lacey Fire. “And,” Brooks reports, “recent updates have made the process of learning and doing CPR easier than ever before.”

Please join us and take the opportunity to learn and practice this life-saving skill. The schedule below lists the locations, times and shifts that will be providing the training. If you have a favorite location or shift, you can join LFD there; if you have a date or time that works best, we look forward to seeing you!

On a recent fire station tour, Firefighter Steve Montgomery slowly transforms from uniformed firefighter to fully outfitted firefighter with protective clothing, breathing air, helmet and mask (think Darth Vader, but in yellow). Seeing the transformation helps children to learn to not be afraid of a fully outfitted firefighter.

Chief Broman Retiring

Lacey Fire District Fire Chief Jim Broman has announced his plans to retire from the District. The bittersweet move will allow the Chief the time and opportunity to pursue projects and interests developed from more than 45 years in the fire service.

Chief Broman has been with Lacey Fire District for 22 years, and has seen the District grow from a small, rural agency to the busiest fire service agency in Thurston County. Services have moved from mobile homes surrounding fire engine garages to modern stations with multiple apparatus bays, living quarters with emergency alerting from dispatch, and equipment maintenance and repair spaces.

In recent years, the Chief has presided over the annexation of the City of Lacey into the Fire District, the expansion of the Board of Fire Commissioners from three to five, leveraging of federal grant money to hire firefighters, recruit volunteers, and procure equipment, and improving advanced life support services in the District through the addition of a halftime medic unit.

Even though Spring is just around the corner, we aren’t out of the woods yet. In times of severe weather, the risk of home fires increases. Late-winter storms and power outages may also create health and safety hazards. Lacey Fire District 3 offers the following suggestions to help you and your family this season:

  • Have furnaces, wood stores and chimneys cleaned and inspected by a qualified heating company.
  • When using kerosene or space heaters, make sure there is a minimum of 36 inches of clearance on all sides of the heater. Small children should not be left unattended in a room with a space heater.
  • If you have frozen pipes, do not attempt to unthaw them with a torch or open flame. Use hot water or an approved device, such as a hand-held dryer.
  • Never burn cardboard boxes, trash or debris in your fireplace or wood stove.
  • Never leave a fire in the fireplace or burning candles unattended.
  • Extinguish the fire before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Always use a metal mesh screen with fireplaces. Leave glass doors open while burning a fire.
  • Have a carbon monoxide alarm if you are using kerosene heaters, gas appliances or fireplaces. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the fumes, CO can kill you before you are aware it is in your home.
  • Have a home fire escape plan – and practice it! Knowing how to escape your home can save your life.
  • Make sure there are working smoke alarms on each level of your home.
  • Test them monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.
  • Stack firewood outdoors at least 30 feet away from your home.
  • Keep roof clear of leaves, pine needles and other debris, and remove branches hanging above the chimney, flues or vents.
  • Never use propane or charcoal barbeque grills indoors. They pose both a fire hazard and the risk of exposing you and your family to toxic gases and potential asphyxiation.
